President’s Day

Activities the Entire Family can enjoy this President’s Day Weekend

President’s Day, celebrated in honor of our greatest presidents, is Monday February 15 this year. If you have kids, they will be out of school and you will have a day off of work. Why not take the opportunity to brighten up what’s been an otherwise cold and miserable winter and so something fun with the entire family?

Play Arts and Crafts

Teach your kids a bit of the history surrounding this holiday by recreating President Abraham Lincoln’s childhood log cabin. Cut a house shape out of construction paper with a cut out of the door and have you kids glue pretzel sticks onto the paper to resemble log cabins. Give your kids a penny to glue inside the door and have them identify Lincoln’s face on it.

Throw an American-Themed Party

Yes, July 4 is reserved for fireworks and the red, blue and white, but President’s Day can be an equally great time of year to show your patriotism and throw a party for your close friends and family! Create center pieces with red, white and blue balloons and line the walls with caricatures of Abraham Lincoln and George Washington. Play all American games like pie eating contests and horseshoes, serve fried chicken and apple pie, and if it’s possible where you live, consider having a fireworks display!

Watch Great American Movies

Rent or buy movies to celebrate this special holiday. Great selections could include: Gone with the Wind, The Lincoln Assassination (an A&E production), All the President’s Men, The American President, and State of the Union.

Take a Trip to Washington

What better place to celebrate President’s Day than to take a trip to Washington D.C.? Of course you may want to book your trip early as the city gets quite busy this time of year. Take the time to view the Revolutionary War Re-enactment on Sunday February 14 at the Fort Ward Museum, take a free walking tour of Alexandria sites associated with George Washington and for sure attend the George Washington Birthday Parade held on Monday from 1-3p.m.!

Take Advantage of the Sales and Go Shopping!

Stores everywhere take advantage of the long weekend with sales. If you’re still looking for the perfect winter coat or fancy dress, now is the time to snag a great deal at your favorite store.

Celebrations are always meant to be fun, so take advantage of this mid-winter holiday and do something special with the time you have off!
